With our extensive knowledge in not only sustainability issues but also BBBEE, we are able to integrate BBBEE into your sustainability objectives. We have over 5 years experience in social auditing and BBBEE verification and environmental expertise, which allows us to verify social and environmental information. Should you have done your BBBEE verification with us in the last year, sustainability assurance would be a continuation of that verification, a huge cost-saving for a company and not an additional verification but an extension of the BBBEE verification.

Our approach is to offer various levels of verification that is unique to a company s needs. We consider several standards and best practises including the following when assuring sustainability information: ISAE3000 (International Standard on Assurance Engagements), GRI G3 (Global Reporting Initiative G3 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines), AA 1000 AS (Accountability 1000 Assurance Standard) and for the South African market we include BBBEE COGP(Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment Codes of Good Practise). One of the other guidelines that need to be given special attention to is the King Report on Governance for South Africa King III. This report states that sustainability is the primary moral and economic imperative of the 21st century. It is one of the most important sources of both opportunities and risks for businesses. Companies will need to demonstrate how they manage their non-financial risks, limit their environmental and social impacts and show responsible business practices. One of the important King III principles that relate to sustainability and specifically independent assurance states Sustainability reporting and disclosure should be independently assured (9.3). As from March 2010, there is a requirement from King III on listed entities to disclose a statement on compliance.

Assurance does provide credibility to a Corporate Sustainability Report. It provides confidence to all stakeholders that a company has produced a complete report that is accurate and transparent.

Assurance Approach:

Our approach is based on the standards mentioned above which includes mainly the AA 1000 AS standard and the GRI G3 guidelines and of course the ISAE3000 standard to which auditing professionals must comply to. Throughout the process, the company will not only benefit by receiving a publishable assurance statement and management report, but also detailed feedback on specific issues highlighted during the assurance process. This will include issues such as data management and quality, reporting systems, process enhancements and other recommendations. Our assurance and evaluation measures the extent to which an organisation has adhered to the Accountability principles namely Inclusivity, Materiality and Responsiveness. It may also include an evaluation of reliability of certain elements of sustainability performance information. It will state in the report as to what assurance standards were considered for a specific assurance provided, same will be stated in the assurance statement.

Types of Assurance we provide:

AA1000AS (2008) allows for the following two types of assurances:

Evaluation of adherence to the AA1000 Accountability Principles Type 1

Evaluation of specific sustainability performance information Type 2

GRI G3  Reporting Framework Assurance

Evaluation of adherence to the AA1000 AccountAbility Principles Type 1

This evaluation is done by looking at policies, practices, management systems and processes a company has in place in order to adhere to performance and public available information (Annual reports, articles, etc). Our aim is to evaluate evidence given by the company with a review to providing a conclusion in relation to each AccountAbility principle, without verifying the reliability of the reported information. The aim of the type 1 assurance is to give all readers of the reporting company s sustainability communication confidence that the company is being inclusive and engaging stakeholders adequately whilst managing their sustainability performance. It also communicates to readers that the company have a comprehensive understanding of what their material issues are and how they manage and respond to these.

Evaluation of specific sustainability performance information Type 2

This type of assurance considers all of the above (Type 1 evaluation) exactly the same but also includes a detailed evaluation of the reliability of specific reported sustainability information. Reported sustainability information is mostly information based on the materiality issues of a company. The quality of the public disclosures will also be evaluated as well as underlying systems, processes, management information and other data. In our evaluation we would have to understand the management and processes of specified performance information and the information collection processes. A review of the design of systems and processes will take place. This will also include collection and evaluating documented evidence, trend analysis, sampling etc. Type 2 measurement will take into consideration a company s specific adherence to a reporting framework and compliance to this reporting framework and would provide findings and conclusions on the compliance to this framework as well (Such as GRI G3).

GRI G3  Reporting Framework Assurance

In response to stakeholder expectations, reporting organizations have adopted a variety of strategies for enhancing the credibility and quality of sustainability reports. One such strategy is external or independent assurance. GRI encourages the independent assurance of sustainability reports and the development of standards and guidelines for the assurance process to be followed by assurance providers. For a company to declare a report is GRI-based, the company should self declare the level to which they have applied the GRI Reporting Framework via the Application Levels system. The levels are titled as follows C, B and A. The reporting criteria at each level reflect a measure of the extend of application or coverage of the GRI Reporting Framework. A (+) sign at each level reflects external assurance was applied. We can assure and educate on the GRI Framework as we have extensive knowledge on this framework and our staff is GRI certified.

           var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ?
